The Sanford Community Center was incorporated in 1933 and was known as the Booker T. Washington Center.  We became the Sanford Community Center with the dedication of a new building in 1951.

The Sanford Center is historically a neighborhood settlement house.  Our primary functions are to assist youth and adults in making a smooth transition to the community of Sioux City and to act as a character building institution for the community's youth for the development of responsible individuals that will become productive and upstanding citizens of our society.

The vision and mission of the Sanford Center’s community-based programs are to work with minority youth (not excluding non-minority children as deemed appropriate) to provide culturally sensitive educational, early intervention, prevention and support services to children and families in Sioux City.  Services target primarily at-risk minority children between the ages of 5 – 17 years from lower-economic families.

Services are based at the Sanford Center and within the Sioux City Community Schools, while including in-home parental/family contact.   Center-based activities are offered to support group activities while also providing linkages with other community service activities.  Juveniles, their families, schools, law enforcement and other interested community agencies will be supported through collaborative efforts.
